Homebrew Competition to Feature Beer Made with Water from Wastewater Treatment Plant

Hillsboro, OR - August 20, 2015

Some of Oregon's best homebrewers will face off Saturday in the 2nd annual Pure Water Brew competition, a contest featuring beer made with highly purified water that came directly from a wastewater treatment plant. The competition judging will be held at The Raccoon Lodge & Brew Pub in SW Portland at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th. The general public and members of the media are invited to attend.

The water used to make the beer came from Clean Water Services' wastewater treatment plant in Forest Grove and was run through a high purity water treatment system to clean it above and beyond the most stringent drinking water standards. When it went into the brew kettle, this water was some of most pure on the planet, having been cleaned with some of the same purification technologies and techniques used by premium bottled water companies.

The concept of reusing water is nothing new. All water we use has at one point been consumed—and will be consumed again. The same water you drink from the faucet today is the same water that fell from the sky when dinosaurs walked the earth.

Carollo Engineers and the Oregon Brew Crew are sponsoring the brewing competition and contributing prizes.

The four best beers will receive $100 each. The best one of these will be named Best In Show and awarded another $50. Each brewer also received $20 to help offset the cost of ingredients. The competition's winning beers will also be featured at the national WateReuse Association's One Water Innovations gala in Seattle, the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC)—the world's largest water quality exhibition.

The Pure Water Brew panel of judges includes:

  • Chair Andy Duyck, Clean Water Services Board/Washington County Commission
  • Commissioner Morgan Rider, Oregon Environmental Quality Commission (EQC)
  • Art Larrance, Co-founder of the Oregon Brewers Festival and Owner of Cascade Brewing Co. and Raccoon Lodge and Brew Pub
  • Bill Gaffi, Clean Water Services General Manager

  • Wayne Gresh, P.E., Carollo Engineers
