Stella Olsen Park is located in the City of Sherwood at the corner of NW Washington St. and NW 3rd St. Cedar Creek is the main tributary that flows through the park.
The purpose of this project is to increase vegetated corridor widths, manage invasive non-native species, and increase canopy cover along the portion of Cedar Creek in and just to the south of Stella Olsen Park. Because the park is open to the public it provided a good opportunity for a collaborative enhancement project. Clean Water Services, the City of Sherwood, Raindrops to Refuge, the Tualatin Riverkeepers and Sherwood Middle School all have worked on this project at different stages.
This site was selected for stream enhancement because Cedar Creek was identified as a high priority watershed as part of the Healthy Streams Plan. Cedar Creek has intact riparian corridors and high quality headwater reaches. Cedar Creek has the potential to support Endangered-Species-Act-listed Steelhead and already supports Cutthroat Trout populations. Restoring these reaches of Cedar Creek is critical to improving the connectivity of the riparian corridor and to reducting in-stream temperatures. The reaches of the creek in this project received invasive species removal and riparian revegetation in order to improve salmonid habitat.
Schedule and budget
The project began in August of 2003 and will continue until 2006. Additional maintenance of invasive species will continue beyond Until 2007. This project is funded by Clean Water Services with contributions from the City of Sherwood. The total cost of the project is $90,000.
