English Holly
Genus: Ilex
Species: aquifolium
Description: Glossy dark green leaves with sharp spines along tips and edges. Small white flowers and small bright red fruit. Often grows into a tall, thick-trunked tree.
How it spreads: Bright red fruits are dispersed by birds. Male and female flowers grow on different trees, rapidly sprout from the roots after being cut down.
What it threatens: Invades upland forests and the edges of wetland areas. Its dense growth blocks light from reaching the forest floor and inhibits the normal growth of native species.
