Fair at the square
Join Clean Water Services at Washington Square this weekend, May 16 and 17 for the Public Works Fair. We'll have an informational booth featuring tips about how to live a watershed-friendly lifestyle. Handouts will include safe grease disposal, natural gardening, River Ranger giveaways for the kids and current information about our future water supply. We'll celebrate with Washington County's Department of Land Use and Transportation, Joint Water Commission, ODOT and Washington County's Bicycle Transportation Coalition.
The Public Works Fair kicks off National Public Works Week May 17-23, 2009. The celebration salutes the people who plan for, build and maintain some of our country's most valued infrastructure—roads, bridges, water and wastewater systems and treatment facilities. They make everything possible, from towns and cities to commerce and industry.
Parker's posey
Congratulations to Parker, the 2008 photo contest winner of our Canines for Clean Water program. Parker earned 75 per cent of the 150 online votes. Parker and his human companion Dan, along with 400 other canines in the Tualatin Basin have taken the pledge to pick up their waste and throw it in the trash. If you haven't pledged your pooch yet, sign up now. Don't forget to send us a photo of your handsome hound wearing the bandana!
Our best assets
Don't miss Liquid Assets when it airs in the Tualatin Basin throughout the month of May on TVCTV. Liquid Assets is a 90-minute documentary that tells the story of water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. These systems—some in the ground for more than 100 years—provide a critical public health function and are essential for economic development and growth. Largely out of sight and out of mind, these aging systems have not been maintained and some estimates suggest this is the single largest public works endeavor in our nation's history. Exploring the history, engineering challenges, and political and economic realities in urban and rural locations, the documentary provides an understanding of the hidden assets that support our way of life. Locations featured in the documentary include Atlanta, Boston, Herminie (Pennsylvania), Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. Local market value
Spring is in the air and many local farmers markets are open for the season. Get plants, baked goods, produce and much more from local vendors. With so many markets in our area, there's sure to be one close to you. Consider walking, biking or taking public transportation, and don't forget to BYOB (bring your own bag).
