Good question

KinnikinnickQuestion: I have been trying to clean out the blackberries and English ivy near the stream behind our house, but need to replant some good ground cover to prevent erosion and the blackberries from returning. I have some sword ferns there naturally, but would Kinnikinnick be a good addition that would not crowd out the ferns?

Answer: Thank you for your question and being a watershed steward! If you have some sunlight and it's not too wet, Kinnikinnick would be a good ground cover and should not crowd out the ferns (it is very low growing). Other things to try are Salal, Salmonberry, Thimbleberry and Low Oregon grape. Most of these plants should co-exist with the sword ferns because they typically occupy the same forest floor niche. If you have a lot of light, also consider native strawberries or stonecrop. Check out our native plant finder to help determine the right plant for your area.
