Let your love flow

It's the season for loving, so why not show your river some love? Send an email to Ely Teragli to get your free copy of 50 Ways to Love Your River developed by the Oregon Environmental Council. From starting a compost pile to getting involved with your local watershed council you'll find 50 tips in this handy guide that help you protect our most precious resource—water. Now, if only relationships were as easy.

Wag the dog

In 2007, more than 300 dogs and their human companions took the Canines for Clean Water pledge, vowing to keep their watersheds clean by scooping the poop and throwing it in the trash. Now it's time to vote for your favorite canine candidate on our website. The top dog of 2007 will receive a $25 gift certificate for environmentally friendly pet items. The polls close Friday, March 14, so vote now! If you haven't pledged your pooch yet, register today to get your free dog bandana.

Roll out the green carpet

Now that the writer's strike is over, it's time to plan your environmentally-friendly Oscar party. Below are a few ideas to make sure you are on the best host list, instead of the worst.

  • Buy local food and favors for your gathering
  • Encourage guests to carpool or take public transportation to your event
  • Save electricity: turn down the thermostat and turn off lights in empty rooms
  • Use glass dishes or ones made from recycled content instead of paper
  • Post party, recycle voting ballots, paper products and soda cans
  • It's a major don't to dump grease and oil down the drain, use a free Freeze the Grease kit instead
  • Dispose of cleaning solutions properly, never outside near a storm drain where pollutants could end up in the nearest stream or river.
