Go brown to get more green
While the temperature rises, grab yourself a cool drink and watch your lawn go brown. It's that simple. You'll have more money in your pocket as you conserve water and keep fertilizers out of our rivers and streams. Keep in mind that as soon as the rain hits in November, our green carpet magically reappears. It's all part of the natural process here in the Pacific Northwest. So, be hip and go brown. Mother Nature will thank you for it and so will your checkbook.
Here are some more water-friendly, money-saving tips:
- If you must water, do so only one-inch per week (a tuna can's worth).
- Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Mow grass higher to promote deep roots and healthy soil.
- Mark your calendar to aerate, thatch, and reseed with a Northwest grass this Fall and next Spring.
- Plant native vegetation using the Native Plant Finder.

Raise your hand and paw for clean streams
More than 200 Tualatin Basin dogs have pledged to be a Canine for Clean Water over the last month. Has yours? Be like Hillsboro's Franklin on the left and receive a free dog scarf for pledging to scoop to protect your local streams. You can then enter your handsome hound in our photo contest. All entrants are posted on our website.
Canines for Clean Water hits the road and will be pledging dogs and humans alike in Tigard on August 18 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Summerlake Dog Park. Also look for pledge volunteers at the Lake Oswego Farmers Market each Saturday. The Tualatin Basin is proud of its water dog-wonders.
