Fall is near—plant and prep for wet days ahead

As the sun sets earlier and the days cool, now is the time to nurtureKeep debris out of storm drains to prevent flooding your lawn and prep your home for the upcoming rainy season. In the Pacific Northwest, September is a great month to reseed your lawn, plant natives, and remove debris from storm drains. More household tips include:

  • Aerate, thatch and reseed with a Northwest grass.
  • Check our online native plant finder for the right vegetation for your yard. Native plants use less water and don't need chemicals to survive.
  • Register for a free Naturescaping for Clean Rivers class on November 18 from 9-1 p.m. at the Tigard Public Library by calling (503) 797-1842.
  • Clear debris from nearby storm drains to prevent flooding.
  • Dispose of your leaves at our 14th Annual Leaf Disposal and Food Drive November 18 and December 9 at Sunset and Aloha High Schools.
  • Cut overhanging tree limbs to prevent roof moss.

Unique stream channel and residential lake project

Clean Water Services (the District) recently began construction on a project at NW 185th and NW Cornell Road to re-establish a free-flowing stream channel in Bronson Creek while also preserving off-channel lakes as requested by adjacent property owners.

Bronson Creek channel enhancementThe Tanasbrook Lakes/Bronson Creek Stream Enhancement is a unique project located at the site of three large residential complexes. The three large lakes were established at this site about 40 years ago by damming Bronson Creek.

Over the years, water quality in the lakes deteriorated and the District identified the lake site as a high priority for restoring a free flowing creek for fish and water quality. After extensive discussions and planning with the owners of the lakes, the District obtained permission to improve the site. Kendra Smith, Senior Water Resources Program Manager for Clean Water Services, noted that the project could not be done without permission and support of the property owners. "That was the most important step in getting this project off the ground."

The lakes were dewatered in the summer of 2006 and construction on the lower lake along SW 185th is currently under way. A berm is being built to establish a stream channel along the south edge of the berm and the adjacent lake on the north side will naturally refill over the winter. The District will enhance the perimeter of the lake and stream with native vegetation to prevent erosion and provide shade.
